Stuart Crystal Earrings

Stuart Crystal Earrings

C.1700.  An extremely well preserved Stuart Crystal example. The original gold ciphers are intact under the clear rock crystal quartz. They are faceted step cut, and reflect lights beautifully. Crystals are set in sterling silver. These would have originally been cuff buttons or cufflinks, and were later converted to earrings. The ear wires are 14k gold.

Stuart Crystal jewelry is rare and highly collectible. They were produced in England under the silent support of the monarchy after the execution of King Charles I in 1649. His loyal Stuart followers wore Stuart crystal jewelry bearing his initials, miniature portrait, or lock of hair. This tradition continued into the 18th century also into forms of marriage or mourning pieces.
