Victorian Vulcanite Long Chain Necklace

Victorian Vulcanite Long Chain Necklace

C.1880-1890. A versatile and very modern looking Victorian vulcanite long chain necklace. Vulcanite is an early thermoplastic derived from rubber, and it was frequently used for mourning jewelry that is black in color. Vulcanization is a high heat process that adds sulphur to the mix and renders the result more sturdy than rubber alone. Different molds created various designs of links, lockets or brooches etc. Often a long chain like this over the years has been separated into multiple to make more necklaces or bracelets, and here we have one that has remained in a nice length of 43". The necklace looks classic as a single strand, or with its generous length, it can be doubled through your head. The necklace has no clasp. Style this long black chain with gold or silver and have fun! Overall the necklace is in great condition.
