Victorian Carved Lava Cameo Drop Earrings

Victorian Carved Lava Cameo Drop Earrings

C.1870. An incredible pair of Victorian carved lava cameo earrings. The top part depicts a deliberately hand-carved cameo, and an amphora adorns the bottom part of the earring. The lava cameos became very popular in fashion in mid-Victorian era due to Mt.Vesuvius in Italy producing an abundance of lava in various colors. They were sought-after because of the exotic colors and texture. Lava cameo jewelry was one of the most popular souvenirs to those who traveled to Italy. This pair of earrings here, is a fine example of archeological revival jewelry. The earrings are set in 14k yellow gold, and each earring weighs approximately 9g. These have been beautifully preserved, and overall are in great condition. Italian in origin.

Total Drop: Approximately 1.95” (without the front wire)
