Large Victorian Carved Lava Pendant

Large Victorian Carved Lava Pendant

C.1860-1870s. A striking Victorian carved lava medusa pendant. The pendant is large and finely hand-carved in high relief. The lava cameo jewelry became very popular in fashion in mid-Victorian era due to Mt.Vesuvius in Italy producing an abundance of lava in various colors. They were sought-after because of the exotic material, and often carved in mythological figures or archeological motifs such as urns or amphorae. Lava cameo jewelry was one of the most popular souvenirs to those who traveled to Italy. This pendant has a 14k gold bail, and on the reverse side, there are three additional loops for hanging extra drops if desired: the bottom three loops stay closed. The pendant is a beautiful statement piece. It is Italian in origin, and overall in great condition.
