Victorian French Jet Maltese Cross Necklace

Victorian French Jet Maltese Cross Necklace

C.1860-1870.  A beautiful Victorian French jet Maltese cross necklace. The necklace is designed with three Maltese crosses (the largest in center) and eight faceted drops in between. French jet jewelry is made of black glass to simulate real Whitby jet stones. French jets became very popular during the Victorian mourning period after the death of Prince Albert, especially in England and Europe along with other black materials in jewelry. The faceted glasses in this necklace are attractively reflective. The back of this necklace is appropriately finished with a black-lacquered (‘japanned’) metal back. There are a few tiny flea bites. The necklace lays beautifully around the neck, and it is comfortable when worn. Overall condition is good.

Approximately 17.25” long, and the central Maltese cross (the largest one) measures 1”x 1”.
