Victorian Cut Steel Turtle Brooch

Victorian Cut Steel Turtle Brooch

C.1860. A unique Victorian cut steel turtle brooch. The brooch has the original c-clasp, and is in very good condition without any major damage or rust. First introduced in the Georgian era in the mid-1700s, cut steel jewelry is made from tiny, polished steel studs individually riveted to a base, creating a brilliant, faceted effect, especially under candlelight. Cut steel was fashioned in many different ornaments: jewelry, buttons, shoe buckles, etc. The smaller and more finely cut the studs, the earlier the piece often is. This type of jewelry remained a popular choice of adornment throughout the Victorian era, with animal motifs like the turtle, a symbol of longevity, being especially charming. The brooch measures approximately 1.65" x 1.10".
