C.1860. A unique Victorian cut steel turtle/tortoise brooch. The brooch has c-clasp, and is in very good condition without any major damage or rust. Cut steel jewelry was introduced in the Georgian era around the mid-1700s. This particular type of jewelry is made with polished steel-faceted studs to create a dazzling effect. Cut steel was fashioned in many different ornaments: jewelry, buttons, shoe buckles, etc. Usually the finer cut steel studs date back to an older period. Throughout the Victorian era, cut steel jewelry continued to be a very popular choice of adornment. This brooch measures approximately 1.65" x 1.10"
