C.1830. An exquisite and proper pair of Biedermeier 14k gold earrings from the Austrian empire, most likely made in Vienna. Reflecting the era's emphasis on domesticity and sentimentality, these earrings are a great example of early 19th century Biedermeier craftsmanship.
They are made using the signature 'Foam Gold' (Schaumgold in German) technique, where thin sheets of 14k gold (or sometimes silver or gilt metal) were pressed into molds to create voluminous, yet lightweight, designs with minimal use of costly material. As a rare and well-preserved example of this technique, these earrings are a remarkable survival from the period.
Designed for versatility, they are a "Day-to-Night" style. The lower, more elaborate drops are detachable, allowing the wearer to enjoy a simple design during the day and a more formal, decorative earring for the evening. Their lightweight construction ensures they are comfortable to wear. We also offer to convert the setting to French wires for easier wear, if desired.
