C.1860. Micromosaic Gold Cross Pendant

C.1860. Micromosaic Gold Cross Pendant

C.1860. A magnificent 19th century Italian micromosaic cross pendant. The mosaic depicts the symbols of christianity - 'Chi Rho' and 'Alpha & Omega' under an urn with olive branches and white doves. In the Christian religion, the olive branch and doves are the symbol of peace, and are often used in reference to peace and happiness. Chi Rho pronounced /kai ro-/ is a monogram of Chi (X) and Rho (Ρ), and it is one of the earliest forms of christogram formed by the first two letters of Greek Khristos Christ. Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, and a title of Christ and god in the Book of Revelation. This pair of letters is used as a Christian symbol, and is often combined with the Chi Rho or other Christian symbols as shown here as well. The mosaic tesserae are finely assembled in beautiful colors of white, blue, red and green. The pendant is set in 18k gold, and the back is plain. There is a Papal States hallmark on the loop. Overall the pendant is in very good condition.
