C.1860. Micromosaic Pendant

C.1860. A large and beautifully made 19th century Italian micromosaic pendant. The mosaic has the unique base color palette of robins egg blue. The pendant depicts the symbols of 'Chi Rho', a grape bunch, flowers and an anchor. The main symbol in this piece, 'Chi Rho' is pronounced /kai ro-/, and it consists of a monogram of Chi (X) and Rho (Ρ). This symbol is one of the earliest configurations of christogram formed by the first two letters of Greek Khristos Christ. The anchor stands for hope. The micro tesserae in this piece are deliberately assembled, and it is smooth to the touch on its surface. The pendant is set in silver gilt, and it is all in original form.  Overall it is in great condition.
