C.1860. A fabulous quality antique micromosaic bulla locket. This Grand Tour souvenir piece is large and double-sided - one side with fine micro tesserae work of Maltese cross with butterflies, and the reverse is adorned with gold granulation and wirework. The center reads 'ROMA'. Two 3-dimensional small gold amphora drops are hanging on the left and right side of the piece. The butterflies symbolize 'resurrection' or 'rebirth'. This locket is crafted in rich 18k gold, and a partially rubbed maker's mark is seen inside at the top left. The Vatican workshop mark of two crossed keys & a mitre was used until 1870. The locket opens with a hinge at the ROMA side, and it remains empty with pink silk fabric inside. The locket weighs 27.70 grams, and overall it is in great condition with natural patina in gold.
