Victorian Piqué Hair Stick with Large Orbs

Victorian Piqué Hair Stick with Large Orbs

C.1860-1870s. A fabulous Victorian piqué hair stick. This piece is distinguished by its striking and large orbs capping each end. Its design showcases an ingenious mechanism: one orb is detachable, acting as a secure closure that ‘opens’ and ‘seals’ the stick. We are delighted to present a piece like this; its aesthetic is so unique, and yet its design is timeless, making it a standout acquisition for the discerning collector.

Piqué is a highly coveted antique technique defined by the meticulous, decorative inlay of gold and silver into an organic material—historically, tortoiseshell—to form intricate patterns. These orbs are adorned with a gorgeous 'star' motif, with the center of the design beautifully accented by a small abalone inlay.
The diameter of each orb is approximately 1.05 inches (they are visually identical in size), and the total length of the stick is approximately 5.5 inches including the both orbs. One orb weighs 12.43 grams. (loose one)

We recommend styling this piece with the open side of the stick oriented upwards for ease of securing the hair. Once the detachable orb is positioned and closed, the stick is held securely in place. Beyond its primary function, this versatile antique offers a sophisticated secondary use: it makes an unusual and chic knitted scarf stopper or shawl pin, adding a touch of history and artistry to any ensemble.
The overall condition of the piqué detailing in this piece is very good, with the exquisite inlays retaining their delicate patterns and luster.
