C. 1860s. A refined French St. Esprit brooch pendant. The Saint Esprit (Holy Spirit) motif, featuring a dove descending to earth, is a classic piece of French regional jewelry. An example such as this, without a bow design, is most likely from the Auvergne area. While the dove carries profound Christian meaning, it also universally represents peace and hope. 

This particular pendant is set in rich 18k gold and presents a chunky, luminous old-cut diamond weighing approximately 1 carat. The drops, symbolically referred to as the "Tears of Christ," are finely completed with ruby, sapphire, and emerald beads.

A versatile piece, it can be worn as a pendant or as a brooch, as it retains its perfectly functional brooch fitting. The top front area displays French eagle head hallmarks and a lozenge-shaped maker's mark. Overall, this magnificent piece is in great condition with a natural patina on the gold.
