C.1870. Victorian Carved Whitby Jet 'Pagoda' Earrings

C.1870. Victorian Carved Whitby Jet 'Pagoda' Earrings

C.1870. A gorgeous pair of Victorian carved Whitby jet drop earrings. 'Whitby jet' was found at the seaside town of Whitby in England, and it was named after the town. The material has an organic origin, being derived from decaying wood under extreme pressure. With its natural color of rich black and light weight, the jet became a very popular material in the Victorian period, especially for mourning jewelry.
These earrings consist of beautifully hand carved three-tier fluted tops, and the orb from the lower body makes a delightful harmony together. The pair is very wearable with the weight of 4.91 and 5.16 grams each, and gives lovely movement when worn. The earrings have the original gold ear wires, and the condition is excellent overall.

Total Drop: Approximately 2.35” (including the front wire) or 2.15" (excluding the front wire)
