Celestial Dialogue: Blue Tassie Intaglio Ring

Celestial Dialogue: Blue Tassie Intaglio Ring

A late 18th century blue Tassie intaglio ring. Tassie is a glass version of a cameo or intaglio. Named after the celebrated Scottish engraver James Tassie (1735–1799), these pieces were highly prized by the British nobility and became iconic symbols of Neoclassical taste. He created numerous miniature profiles and medals for the nobles in Britain, and made this type of intaglios very popular.

This intaglio is housed in a later, mid-to-late 20th-century sterling silver mount. Its "chunky" face depicts a classical female figure—likely Psyche or the lunar goddess Selene—in a moment of quiet communion with the heavens. Seated in a pensive profile, the figure leans gracefully toward a crescent moon. In Neoclassical iconography, this scene often represents the Soul (Psyche) contemplating the infinite or the Goddess of Night presiding over the evening sky. The deep cobalt hue of the glass serves as a symbolic "night sky," providing a vivid, luminous backdrop for the finely draped robes and celestial motifs.

Substantial in the hand with a weight of 8.63g, the ring remains in good overall condition, offering a wearable piece of history that bridges the 18th and 20th centuries.
