Victorian Masonic Secret Folding Orb Pendant

Victorian Masonic Secret Folding Orb Pendant

This ingenious, hand-crafted piece is a great example of symbolic Victorian-era jewelry. Crafted in 9k gold, the pendant initially presents as a smooth, polished orb, hiding its true complexity from the uninitiated eye.

Commonly known as a "Masonic Ball," these pendants became highly fashionable in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At a time when Freemasons often preferred to keep their fraternal affiliations discreet, this "secret" jewelry allowed a member to carry his symbols close to his heart while appearing to wear a simple gold bauble. Only when the hidden catches are released does the orb transform, revealing its identity as a Masonic Cross.

When the orb is open, the cross measures approximately 40mm x 31mm, and when closed, it is approximately 17mm or 11/16'' in diameter.
It has a 375 mark for 9k gold. The pendant opens and closes firmly. Overall this pendant is in very good condition, and ready to be worn with a chain of yours.
