Rare French Rooster and Bird Motif Watch Chain

Rare French Rooster and Bird Motif Watch Chain

Circa 1840s, a superb and exceptionally rare French watch chain. The chain is crafted in silver and 18k gold, featuring motifs of roosters, a stork, ivy leaves, and a hand. The details of the bird are finely executed, and the three-dimensional form makes the intricate details stand out. The chain is attributed to the Parisian firm, Morel et Duponchel. Morel et Cie was a highly successful Parisian silversmith and goldsmith firm operating in the mid-19th century (1842-1848). A reputable gold and silversmith, Jean-Valentin Morel (1794-1860), and the French architect and silversmith Henri Duponchel (1794-1868) established the firm.

The chain measures approximately 13 inches in length and has a substantial weight of 42.08 grams. This unique watch chain pairs beautifully with a simple gold, silver chain, or even a pearl strand. Overall, the chain is in excellent condition, retaining a beautiful, natural patina on the silver and gold.
