Victorian Banded Agate Archaeological Revival Pendant-Brooch

Victorian Banded Agate Archaeological Revival Pendant-Brooch

C. 1860-1870. A Victorian Archaeological Revival banded agate pendant/brooch: a quintessential example of the style that became immensely popular in the mid-to-late 19th century. This piece is crafted in 18k gold, and features a symmetrical cruciform design set with five domed, square-shaped agates that exhibit beautifully matching strong white bandings. The goldwork is finely detailed, showing the classical techniques such as granulation and wirework that mimic the ancient Etruscan styles rediscovered during 19th-century excavations. Each point of this pendant completes in a triangular, architectural pediment, while the negative space between is filled with intricate granulated rondelles.

Offering superb versatility, the brooch fitting on the reverse is fully detachable; the original c-clasp folds down, and the pin can be removed via a cylinder bar mechanism. The piece retains a deep, rich patina and remains in excellent condition throughout, with the mechanical fittings in perfect working order.
