C.1880. A gorgeous pair of Victorian carved Whitby jet drop earrings. 'Whitby jet' was found at the seaside town of Whitby in England. It was named after the town where it was found. The material has an organic origin, being derived from decaying wood under extreme pressure. With its natural color of rich black, Jet became very popular in the Victorian period.
The earrings have three-tier fluted tops, and the lower body of the earrings shows beautiful etchings on it. They are very wearable/lightweight, and give lovely movement when worn. The earrings now have new 14k gold ear wires.
Total Drop: Approximately 3.30” (including the front wire) or 2.85" (excluding the front wire)
